Wanting to hole up somewhere in the beautiful New Zealand countryside for a few days, to enjoy the natural scenery and fresh pure air? New Zealand has a traditional of families having rustic beach “bachs”, simple holiday homes. The easiest way to experience this side of New Zealand is through Airbnb. Here are some rustic Airbnbs in NZ to consider, two on the North Island and two on the South Island.
? Dog-friendly: Two of these rustic Airbnbs in NZ are dog-friendly, see below. For more tips on staying in an Airbnb with a dog, read my guide.
Beach Huts in the Bay of Islands
The Bay of Islands is located in the far north of New Zealand. It’s a popular destination for sun seeking holiday makers, looking to do a scenic cruise, swim with dolphins or do some snorkelling and diving. (Just don’t expect warm water, it’s a bit chilly unless you’re also from somewhere with cold water.) These rustic beach huts are located 20km from the main town of Kerikeri.
One hut is the bedroom, that can accomodate 4 guests in a queen bed and 2 loft singles. The other hut is a kitchen/dining room with gas hob, chilly bin and solar power. The bathroom facilities are quite primitive. The toilet is an old fashioned bush loo, and the shower is attachable between the two huts. The owners recommend thinking about it as camping (but with a proper bed!)
? Dog-friendly: This Airbnb allows dogs by prior arrangement. An additional cleaning fee may apply for extra hairy or swimming dogs.
A Water View Cabin Near Coromandel
The Coromandel Peninsula is located 2 hours away from Auckland, around the Firth of Thames. On the western side of the peninsula is Coromandel Town. This delightful cabin is just 2km outside of the township, with beautiful 180 degree water-views of the harbour. Explore the natural attractions of the area, including the hot water beach. Or just chill out with a glass of wine on your doorstep. The sunsets are particular spectacular over the water to the west! The cabin is compact, but with a simple kitchen and proper bathroom, and sleeps 2.
A Retro Seaside Cottage in Coastal Otago
The Otago region of New Zealand is the southern part of the South Island, including Dunedin, Queenstown and Oamaru. Located 10 minutes south of historic Oamaru, this retro seaside cottage is decorated in mid-century style. It has everything you need for a comfortable stay, including a wall mounted heat pump that warms the entire house in minutes – perfect for the long, cold winters. It’s a short walk to Campbell’s Bay beach, which can also be glimpsed from the cottage, and sleeps up to 2 people.
A Country Cottage North of Kaikoura
This traditional cottage is situated on a farm in the Clarence Valley, about 20km north of Kaikoura, mid-way between Picton and Christchurch. It’s a great choice for a family stay, with the 3 bedrooms and 1.5 bathrooms accommodating up to 6 guests. There’s even a table tennis table and equipment for playing cricket, Pitonque and croquet on site. Be prepared for plenty of relaxation, with no wi-fi and no phone service at the cottage. Instead enjoy the views with a glass of wine on the verandah!
? Dog-friendly: This Airbnb allows dogs, but they must stay outside.
