Dog-Friendly Beaches Jervis Bay

Are Dogs Allowed on Beaches at Jervis Bay?

The Jervis Bay region is home to many dog-friendly beaches. By default, on-leash dogs are allowed on most beaches. Keep in mind though that dogs are prohibited from some beaches.

One of the main exceptions are the nearby national parks. Dogs are strictly not allowed in any of the national parks, including on the beaches. This includes Booderee National Park, which includes the popular Green Patch Beach, and Jervis Bay National Park, which includes Greenfields Beach and the beaches around the Red Point Picnic Area.

Dogs are also prohibited from some other popular beaches – dog prohibited signs are prominently displayed at these beaches. Dogs are prohibited from these beaches:

  • Shark Net Beach in Huskisson, south to Nowra Street
  • Collingwood Beach in Vincentia
  • Blenheim Beach in Vincentia
  • The centre of Callala Beach, between Centre Street and Parkes Crescent
  • The Myola Spit, south of the carpark, plus the mudflats of Currambene Creek
  • Palm Beach in Sanctuary Point

Outside of these beaches, by default dogs are allowed on-leash on the beaches. Additionally, there are a number of beaches where dogs are allowed off-leash at certain times of day.

Are Dogs Allowed on Hyams Beach?

One of the most famous beaches at Jervis Bay is Hyams Beach. This beach is renown for its white sand, with tourists flocking from around the state and even overseas to visit this beach.

Best of all, it’s possible to visit Hyams Beach with your dog. Dogs are not prohibited from Hyams Beach nor are dogs allowed off-leash on Hyams Beach. This means that dogs are allowed on-leash on Hyams Beach.

Make sure you always keep your dog leashed on Hyams Beach, all day long, whether they’re walking along the sand with you, sitting on your towel or enjoying a paddle in the calm, clear bay waters.

The main issue with visiting Hyams Beach is that it is so popular. The carpark is only small and there’s not much more parking nearby. Even when I’ve visited during the week outside of summer the carpark can be nearly full. Parking is close to impossible during summer weekends!

Perhaps consider visiting one of the other nearby beaches at Jervis Bay, where the sand is nearly as white and the parking situation is easier. Even better, some of the other beaches at Jervis Bay allow dogs off-leash for part of the day.

Off-Leash Dog Beaches at Jervis Bay

There are a number of beaches around Jervis Bay that allow dogs off-leash. However, none of these beaches are off-leash all day long. Instead, dogs are only allowed off-leash during part of the day.

Between October and April, dogs are only permitted off-leash on the beaches before 8am or after 4pm. During the cooler months from May to September, the off-leash hours are extended to before 10am or after 3pm. During the rest of the day, dogs are still allowed on the beaches, but need to be on a leash.

Nelsons Beach, Vincentia

Probably one of the best off-leash alternatives to Hyams Beach is Nelson Beach in Vincentia, located in between the main hub of Huskisson and Hyams Beach itself.

The sand on Nelsons Beach is almost as white as at Hyams Beach and there is plenty of parking just above the beach (although it still gets full in summertime!) Access is by stairs, with the beach fairly isolated from the street.

Huskisson Beach, Huskisson

Another off-leash beach right in Huskisson itself is the stretch of Huskisson Beach between Nowra Street and Tapalla Avenue. (To the north of Nowra Street is Shark Net Beach, where dogs are prohibited.)

There’s plenty of parking and picnic facilities underneath the shady trees of Moona Moona Creek Reserve. Just avoid the tip of the point and the creek side where dogs are prohibited due to nesting shorebirds.

Callala Beach, Callala

Across Currambene Creek from Huskisson is the bayside village of Callala Beach. There’s plenty of holiday houses in Callala Beach, including pet-friendly options.

Dogs are allowed along most of Callala Beach, except in between Parkes Crescent and Centre Street, plus south of the Beach Road car park on Myola Spit – both areas where dogs are prohibited. Along the rest dogs are allowed off-leash during restricted hours.

Currarong Beach, Currarong

The next off-leash beach around Jervis Bay isn’t actually located on the bay – instead Currarong Bech is an ocean-facing beach just outside the bay. Despite this, the water at low tide was still very calm when we visited.

Dogs are allowed off-leash along most of this beach, in between Peel Street and the creek. Keep in mind dogs still need to be leashed during the middle of the day.

The final off-leash beach near Jervis Bay is also an ocean-facing beach. Dogs are allowed off-leash along the beach between Park Row and Tilbury Cove and the adjacent reserve during restricted hours.

In addition to the above off-leash beaches, there are also a number of other beaches around Jervis Bay where dogs are permitted, but need to stay on-leash. In addition to Hyams Beach (see above), check out these on-leash dog beaches at Jervis Bay:
