The Best Travel Insurance for Pet Owners in Australia

As someone who’s travelled extensively with my dog, I know that travel insurance usually doesn’t offer any coverage for your pet. Instead you’ll need to rely on pet insurance alone, which often doesn’t provide coverage outside of your home country, or else there are restrictions on overseas cover.

However, for domestic trips or overseas trips that you take alone, without your pet, I recently uncovered a great travel insurance option for pet owners in Australia that provides extra cover related to your pets at home. Read on to find out more about the coverage that Covermore provides for your pet.

How Covermore Covers Your Pets

Now I’ll admit upfront, the Covermore insurance coverage for your pets isn’t designed for if you’re travelling with your pet, as least on international trips. However, as an Australian, it’s not realistic to take my pet along on short overseas holidays, thanks to the cost and quarantine situation, and this insurance is ideal for these situations.

In the past, when I’ve checked what insurance clauses apply to my pet, usually the only relevant clause is coverage for your pet’s care or stay in a kennel, if you’re delayed returning home. However, when checking out Covermore, after it was recommended to me by a friend, I discovered that they provide more extensive coverage for pet owners.

The extra perk that Covermore offers for pet owners is under the Cancellation Extension section of the Comprehensive and Comprehensive+ International and Domestic Plans. If you need to cancel your journey for multiple reasons, including “if your pet cat or dog becomes ill or injured or dies”, then you can potentially make a claim.

Note that this section does not apply to the Basic International or Domestic Plans (which also don’t provided coverage for pet cat or dog boarding). Plus this clause only applies for life-threatening illness or injury or a sudden death, and evidence from a qualified veterinarian needs to be provided.

I recommend reading the full details in the latest Product Disclosure Statement (PDS), including what expenses are covered and the calculation of coverage. Download the latest PDS from their website.

It’s great that Covermore is treating your pet as family members and recognising that you’re just as likely to change your travel plans if they become ill or injured, the same as for other close family members.

Getting a Covermore Quote

When getting a quote with Covermore, there is one step that makes them different to most other travel insurance providers I’ve used. Your initial quote doesn’t include any cancellation coverage, which is handy if you don’t have many pre-paid costs or you can cancel them free of charge. You then select the level of cancellation coverage that you want, if you want any.

Just note that if you do want cancellation cover, at first the coverage can seem quite cheap, but the quote will increase substantially based on the level of coverage you select. Additionally, the above cancellation extension clause for pets is based on the level of cancellation coverage you select – it doesn’t apply if you don’t have cancellation cover.

Making a Claim with Covermore

I currently don’t have experience making a claim with Covermore (crossing fingers this continues!), but if I do make a claim, I will share my experience of the process.
